WHAT IS GAF?

General Aniline & Film Corporation (GAF) is the largest roofing manufacturer in North America. It holds roughly 30 to 35 percent of the U.S. residential shingle market. Their flagship Timberline series has been the best-selling shingle in America for decades. They also operate multiple plants across the country and have one of the most thorough certification programs in the industry.

Types of GAF Shingles

• Timberline HDZ: GAF's flagship architectural shingle and the most popular shingle installed by volume. It features LayerLock technology, a 130 MPH wind warranty, and StainGuard Plus algae protection with a 25-year warranty.
• Timberline UHDZ: The ultra-high definition version with a thicker profile and more pronounced shadow lines for a more high-end look. Same performance specs as the HDZ, more dimensional appearance.
• Timberline AS II (ArmorShield): GAF's Class 4 impact-resistant shingle. Designed to hold up better against hail and may help homeowners qualify for insurance discounts depending on their carrier.
• Camelot II and Grand Sequoia: Designer-tier shingles for homeowners looking for something with a lot of visual appeal. Camelot II mimics the look of European slate; Grand Sequoia has a more rustic, wood-shake-inspired profile.

WHAT IS OWENS CORNING?

Owens Corning is a Fortune 500 company and the second-largest roofing manufacturer in North America. They're probably best known for their pink color branding, but what actually sets them apart is their patented SureNail technology, which is arguably one of the biggest advancements in shingle fastening in the last two decades. They hold about 20 to 25 percent of the U.S. residential shingle market.

• Duration: Owens Corning's flagship architectural shingle and the direct competitor to GAF's Timberline HDZ. Features SureNail technology, a 130 MPH wind warranty, and StreakGuard algae resistance.
• Duration FLEX: The SBS-modified, Class 4 impact-resistant version of the classic Duration. Widely considered one of the best impact-resistant shingles on the market.
• Oakridge: Owens Corning's value-tier architectural shingle. A top-rated performer for anyone whose main priority is finding a budget-friendly option.
• Berkshire: The premium designer option. Features an oversized slate-inspired profile for homes where aesthetics are a top priority.

GAF VS. OWENS CORNING

1. Wind Performance

Both brands carry a 130 MPH wind warranty on their flagship architectural shingles, which meets or exceeds Florida building code requirements. The difference is in how they get there.

GAF uses LayerLock technology, which mechanically bonds shingle layers together for added uplift resistance.

Owens Corning has its patented SureNail strip, which is a reinforced fabric band in the nailing zone that offers approximately twice the fastener holding power of a standard shingle. From an installation standpoint, it gives roofers a very visible target that can help create more consistent fastener patterns across the roof.

Bottom line: both are rated for the same wind speed. In practice, SureNail's visible nailing zone makes installation a bit easier in a way that LayerLock doesn't, which is one reason some installers prefer it.

2. Algae Resistance

In Florida's humidity, algae streaking can be a sign that the shingle surface is breaking down faster than it should. Owens Corning's StreakGuard is warranted for 10 to 15 years depending on the product tier, while GAF's StainGuard Plus provides a 25-year algae resistance warranty on the Timberline HDZ.

Bottom line: GAF has a pretty substantial edge on warranty length, which matters more in Tampa Bay's climate than it would in a drier region.

3. Warranty Structure

Both manufacturers offer nearly identical tiered warranty structures. The standard lifetime limited material warranty is available from either brand regardless of installer, but it only covers the shingles themselves, not the labor if something goes wrong. The enhanced warranty tiers are where workmanship warranty coverage comes in.

GAF has its Silver Pledge (10-year workmanship) and Golden Pledge (25-year workmanship) warranties. Both are backed by GAF and require a GAF-certified installer plus the full GAF accessory system.

Owens Corning offers Preferred Protection (10-year workmanship) and Platinum Protection (25-year workmanship) that are structured the same way. These require an OC-certified contractor and the full OC system.

Bottom line: the programs are pretty much the same at each tier. The most important thing is working with a contractor who is certified by whichever brand is being installed, since that's what will unlock the workmanship coverage.

4. Color Selection

GAF offers a pretty broad range of colors across most of its product lines, so it may be easier to find a close match for a specific exterior palette or to coordinate with certain architectural details.

Owens Corning has fewer overall options, but its TruDefinition blending process means you can mix multiple granule colors to create a layered, dimensional look.

Bottom line: if finding a specific color is the priority, GAF gives you more to work with. If you care more about depth and dimension than breadth of choice, Owens Corning may be worth seeing in person before you make a decision.

5. Pricing

In Tampa Bay, both brands are priced within five to ten percent of each other at comparable product tiers. The Timberline HDZ and the Duration are close enough that the brand choice rarely moves the final number in any meaningful way.

Bottom line: roof complexity and labor will drive the cost more than the per-bundle price difference between the two brands. You can choose based on the product instead of the price.

6. Impact-Resistant Options

Both brands offer Class 4 shingles, which may qualify for a Florida homeowner's insurance discount.

GAF makes the ArmorShield II, which is built with SBS-modified construction and rated Class 4.

Owens Corning makes the Duration FLEX, which is also Class 4 and pretty widely installed across Florida.

Bottom line: either qualifies for the same insurance discounts. The decision between them usually comes down to which brand is being used for the rest of the roof system, since matching the full system is what will unlock the best warranty coverage.
