Move valuables away from the leak, place buckets to catch water, and take photos of the damage for your insurance claim. Do not climb on your roof. Read our full guide: Emergency Roof Repair - What to Do.
An active leak, storm damage, or a suddenly compromised roof is a roofing emergency. Take these eight steps in order.

Step 1: Safety first. Get everyone out of the affected area. Do not climb on the roof, even to look. Wet shingles and metal are extremely slippery, and Florida hail-damaged roofs often have hidden weak spots. If you see downed power lines or exposed electrical, call 911 first.

Step 2: Cut power if water is near electrical. Shut off breakers to affected circuits at your electrical panel. Water near outlets, ceiling fixtures, or fuse boxes is a shock and fire hazard.

Step 3: Contain indoor damage. Move valuables away from active leaks, put down buckets or trash cans to catch water, drape plastic or towels over furniture that cannot be moved, and pull up wet carpet corners to reduce mold risk.

Step 4: Document everything. Photo and video every visible sign of damage inside and outside the house (only from the ground) before anything is moved or cleaned. Time-stamped photos are your strongest insurance-claim evidence.

Step 5: Call a licensed roofer for emergency tarping. Call Happy Roof at (813) 595-7663 for 48-hour Tampa Bay emergency response. We arrive with heavy-duty tarps, secure them properly to prevent secondary damage, and generate a written damage report on the spot.

Step 6: Notify your insurance carrier within 24 hours. Most Florida homeowners policies require prompt notice, and delayed reporting is a common claim-denial reason. Give them your date and time of damage, general description, and photos. Do not accept a settlement figure until Happy Roof's licensed inspector has documented the full damage scope.

Step 7: Do not DIY repairs. Silicone caulk, duct tape, DIY tarping with hardware-store poly sheeting, or letting a non-licensed handyman patch anything can void manufacturer warranties, void the workmanship coverage on the rest of your roof, and give the insurance carrier grounds to deny the claim. Wait for a licensed contractor.

Step 8: Wait for the written estimate before signing anything. Never sign an Assignment of Benefits, contingency agreement, or repair contract based on a verbal quote made in the aftermath of a storm. Happy Roof provides a written itemized estimate before any permanent work begins.
